Washington Irving’s Sunnyside offers partial wheelchair accessibility. We encourage visitors with mobility concerns to review the following details to determine if the site meets their needs.
Parking and Path to Visitor Center
- Wheelchair-accessible parking is available in the main lot.
- A steep, winding, paved ramp (approx. 379 feet) leads from the parking lot to the Visitor Center.
Visitor Center
- The Visitor Center is accessible via a ramp, though the doors are not automatic.
- Inside the Visitor Center, a set of three steps leads to the main path to the Cottage. Staff can assist with an alternate step-free route upon request.
- Accessible restrooms are located at the Visitor Center.
Path to Cottage and Historic Core
- From the Visitor Center, the walk to the Cottage is about 570 feet on a graded decline, primarily along a wide, coarse pebble path.
- The return path includes a steep, paved incline of about 380 feet.
Cottage
- The grounds and the first floor of the Cottage are wheelchair accessible.
- The second floor and kitchen are not accessible due to steep, narrow staircases.
- Interior spaces include narrow hallways, and some rooms contain physical barriers.
- Visitors exit the Cottage into a gravel courtyard and descend two steps to the piazza, where tours conclude.
